Born in the Ayrshire mining town of Glenbuck, Shankly enjoyed a successful career as a player before being appointed Liverpool manager in 1959. Leading the club to huge success both domestically and in Europe, Shankly is credited with instilling a winning mentality which would see Liverpool go on to become one of the most successful clubs in English football.
