Oktober 1917. Storbritannien har förlorat många av sina bästa piloter under kriget. As he grows up and becomes aware of his sexuality, Quentin (John Hurt) is determined never to hide who he is, despite the highly conservative and intolerant society he is living in. After becoming a prostitute and then an artist, he is rejected from serving in the military in WWII and instead takes up nude modelling at an art school.
