Arlene McKinney (Helen Hunt) är en ensamstående mor, som bor tillsammans med sin tolvårige son Trevor (Haley Joel Osment) i ett fattigt kvarter. Hon dubbelarbetar i ett fåfängt hopp om att förbättra sitt och sonens liv. Trevor går i Simonets klass.
