Efter händelserna i första Terminator har Sarah Connor blivit intagen på mentalsjukhus och hennes son John Connor har placerats i fosterhem. Från framtiden skickas två cyborger, en T-1000 med uppdraget att döda John, och en omprogrammerad Serie T-800 Model 101 för att skydda honom. Samtidigt som de försvarar sig måste de också hitta den man som är skyldig till att Skynet förklarar krig mot mänskligheten.

Val Kilmer spelar Jim Morrison i Oliver Stones hallucinatoriska dramadokumentär om den mytomspunna 60-talsgruppen The Doors. Ju framgångsrikare The Doors blir, desto mer ökar Morrisons fixering vid döden.
