Mot bakgrund av Jesus Kristus tid på jorden lever den judiska prinsen Judah Ben-Hur (Charlton Heston) i den romerska provinsen Judeen. Hans gamle vän Messala, numera en maktgalen romersk tribun, vänder sig emot honom när Judah inte går med på att förråda det judiska folket till förmån för romerska intressen.
