'The Devil' (1972), banned by the Polish government upon its release, is set during the Prussian invasion of Poland in the 1790s. Jakub (Teleszynski) is imprisoned on charges of conspiracy and treason but is freed by a black-clad stranger (Wojciech Pszoniak) who sends him home with Zakonnica (Monika Niemczyk), a white-clad nun. 'Ostinato Lugubre' takes place in a Prisoner of War camp, where the escape bid of Lt. Zawistowski (Tadeusz Lomnicki) becomes a subject of legend among the patriotic Polish POWs.
