As Giovanni Pontano (Mastroianni) celebrates the publication of his latest book, he and his wife Lidia (Moreau) visit a seriously ill friend in hospital. From there they progress to a book signing for Giovanni and later a party but Lidia remains aloof. When they leave the party at dawn, the two are finally forced to confront the state of their marriage and consider their future together.
