Efter succén med "Who's Next" från 1971 återvände Pete Townshend till rockopera-konceptet som föddes med "Tommy" från 1969. Resultatet blev den ambitiösa dubbel-LPn "Quadrophenia" - en berättelse om ett mods, Jimmy, och hans utmaningar för att växa upp under mitten av 60-talet. Jimmy är en desillusionerad grabb som tillbringar den mesta av tiden med att festa, knapra tabletter och slåss mot rockers i ett motorcykelgäng. Hans fyra olika personligheter representerar de fyra medlemmarna i gruppen: tuffingen (sångaren Roger Daltrey), galningen (trummisen Keith Moon), romantikern (basisten John Entwistle) och hycklaren (Townshend själv). <br/>Än i dag anser Townshend att detta är det album som han är mest stolt över.
