In 'The Elephant Man' (1980), John Merrick (John Hurt) is a brutalised man, treated as a freak since childhood because of his appalling physical deformities, until he is discovered by London doctor Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins), who treats him with the kindness and intelligence he deserves. Unfortunately, by awakening his true character the problems continue, for he can never lead a 'normal' life. In 'Mulholland Drive' (2001), having narrowly survived a murder attempt and a car crash, a shocked and wounded woman (Laura Elena Harring) takes refuge in a nearby apartment. When she is discovered the next morning by the apartment's official resident, aspiring actress Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), she confesses that she neither knows who she is nor what happened to her. The two women then begin to investigate, and it gradually becomes clear that they have known each other in the past. Meanwhile, a young film director (Justin Theroux) finds that the mob are taking an unusual interest in the casting of his latest film. Finally, in 'Inland Empire' (2006), Laura Dern plays Nikki Grace, an ingenue actress whose latest role in a Tennessee Williams-esque fright of a film tests her to her limits. A parallel storyline shows an earlier attempt to make this film in Poland which ended in tragedy when the two lead players were offed.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

Estranged from his teenage daughter Stephanie (Evan Rachel Wood) and unable to sustain any real relationships, Randy lives for the thrill of the show and the adoration of his ever-dwindling fan base. When a heart attack forces him into retirement, his sense of identity starts to slip away, and he is forced to evaluate the state of his life. But his fumbling attempts to reconnect with his daughter and forge an ongoing relationship with exotic dancer Cassidy (Marisa Tomei) are overshadowed by his strong desire to get back into the ring, whatever the cost.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray</i>

As the pair head south in search of Marianne's brother, Ferdinand unwittingly gets caught up in his new lover's crimes and they both spiral down a path of self-destruction.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

Former FBI profiler Will Graham (Petersen), who specialised in catching serial killers, is brought out of early retirement to assist in the hunt for a killer known as the Tooth Fairy (Tom Noonan). Graham's tactic is to enter the mindset of the criminal he is pursuing but this takes a significant emotional toll. Meanwhile, he consults with former psychiatrist and serial killer Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox), who is now in prison and whose attack on Graham led to his previous retirement. When it becomes apparent that Lecktor and the Tooth Fairy have been in contact with each other, Graham realises that his family is in danger. Jacques Mayol (Jean-Marc Barr) can reach unprecedented depths without breathing apparatus, while Enzo (Jean Reno) is driven to dive by obsession. Johana (Rosanna Arquette) falls for Jacques when she sees him diving in Peru. Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) is a young girl in a remote mountain village in Spain in 1944 after Franco's ascension to power. To escape the upheaval and hardship her family faces (her father died in the war and her mother (Ariadna Gil) has been forced to re-marry to a despotic Captain in Franco's fascist army), Ofelia creates a world in her mind. It's a beautiful place though not without its dark side but she's guided by a ghastly yet kindly fawn creature. The Captain, it soon transpires, is more interested in the son Ofelia's mother is carrying, than he is in either Ofelia or her mother. Mercedes (Maribel Verdú), the Captain's considerate servant, and Dr. Ferreiro the Captain's physician, are, it transpires, in league with the revolutionaries in the woods surrounding the army encampment. These resistance fighters are intent on liberating the rationed food and medicines they need. As the increasingly manic and paranoid captain assassinates anyone who looks at him the wrong way with alarming regularity, Ofelia's secret quests set by the fawn creature to unlock the portal to another world become more and more urgent. With its deft mixing of CGI and actual character scenes, political and social statement, Pan's Labyrinth has been referred to already as 'The Citizen Kane of fantasy films'.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>
