Some local authorities in the UK banned the film and there were protests outside cinemas that did show it, leading John Cleese (Darren Boyd) and Michael Palin (Charles Edwards) to appear in a televised debate with journalist Malcolm Muggeridge (Michael Cochrane) and the Bishop of Southwark (Roy Marsden) to defend the film against their criticism.
