Ta den del av Sherlock Holmes-mytologin som nu flyttats till USA och historierna utspelas i nutid. Sherlock Holmes bor i New York efter rehabilitering för sina drogrelaterade problem. Han vill gärna återgå till sitt tidigare jobb som fristående konsult i brottsutredningar och kontaktar därför sin gamla vän inom New York-polisen, Tobias Gregson. För att Sherlock inte ska få ett återfall i dåliga vanor engageras dr Joan Watson. Tillsammans tar de sig an en mängd olika fall där Sherlocks unika logiska förmågor får fritt spelrum.
