Lyra Belaqua är en liten flicka som bor bland studenterna på ett college i Oxford. Hennes värld kan tyckas annorlunda, med själar som tar fysisk form som djur, men ändå är den lik vår med vänner till hennes hjälp och fiender som kommer i hennes väg.
