'Element of Crime' (1984) is von Trier's highly stylised debut feature. Returning from exile in Egypt, police detective Leopold Fisher (Michael Elphick) is asked to investigate a series of murders in which the victims have all been young female ticket sellers. Fisher's approach is to try to adopt the perspective of the killer and thus to predict where and when the next murder will take place, but when he meets the beautiful Kim (Me Me Lei), the line separating investigation and crime begins to blur. In 'Epidemic' (1987), von Trier plays a director collaborating with a writer on a film script about an epidemic spreading throughout the world. As they become intensely focused on their work, they fail to realise that a real epidemic is taking place around them. An adaptation of the Greek tragedy, 'Medea' (1988) stars Kirsten Olesen in the titular role as the pained wife of warrior Jason (Udo Kier), who has agreed to marry Glauce (Ludmilla Glinska), the daughter of King Creon of Corinth (Henning Jensen). Creon grants Medea one day to tend to her affairs before she and her two sons are banished. After Medea arranges to seek sanctuary in Athens with her children, she first must have her ruthless vengeance on all those who have wronged her. 'Europa' (1991) is set in the aftermath of the Second World War. Leo (Jean-Marc Barr), a young German-American, travels to Germany to help rebuild the country. Working as a train conductor, he witnesses the cruel treatment of German civilians by Allied soldiers and the horrendous destruction brought about by the war as his train stops at towns that no longer exist. Eventually he becomes involved with the railroad boss's daughter, herself an ex-Nazi partisan. Set in rural Scotland, 'Breaking the Waves' (1996) follows a devout young religious woman, Bess (Emily Watson), as she meets and falls in love with oil rig worker Jan (Stellan Skarsgård). Despite opposition from her community they marry, and when Jan returns to the rigs, Bess counts the days until his return. However, when Jan is later paralysed in an accident and is unable to engage in intimacy with his wife, he urges her to take a lover and relate their sexual acts to him, which Bess believes will help him to recover. Set in present-day Denmark, 'The Idiots' (1998) follows timid Karen (Bodil Jorgensen) who has a chance encounter with a group of eccentrics engaged in a strange, informal experiment where they pretend to be mentally disabled. Initially shocked, Karen finds herself compelled to stay and eventually joins them in the experiment. However, as the group's acts of 'idiocy' grow more extreme, and the reality of the outside world becomes more intrusive, the border between liberation and self-destruction begins to blur. 'Dogville' (2003) stars Nicole Kidman as Grace, a beautiful fugitive with a dangerous secret. Arriving in the small town of Dogville in the Rocky Mountains in the 1930s, she offers her services to the people of the town in return for a safe place to hide. The townsfolk reluctantly agree to shelter Grace for two weeks. But as it becomes increasingly dangerous to harbour her, they come to expect favours from Grace, and the more she gives, the greater her obligations become. In 'Manderlay' (2005), fugitive Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) arrives on the cotton plantation Manderlay to find that her father (Willem Dafoe) and their mob of gangsters have allowed slavery to continue. Freeing the slaves, Grace tries to teach them the rudiments of democracy and self-reliance, but soon comes to realise that she is merely imposing her own values on a culture about which she has little or no understanding. In 'The Boss of It All' (2006), Jens Albinus stars as the boss of an IT company who, on the firm's startup, invents a fake CEO to divert issues to when potential employee problems threaten to arise. Everything rolls along nicely until the time when he decides that he wants to sell the business. With negotiations about to begin, the prospective new owners insist on dealing with the CEO face-to-face, forcing the boss to come up with a deceptive plot to maintain his anonymity. 'Antichrist' (2009) stars Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg as a couple grieving the death of their young son. The mother is initially admitted to hospital following the incident, but her husband - a therapist - insists on taking her to their remote forest cabin, 'Eden', and looking after her himself. Presented in four chapters with a prologue and epilogue, the film charts the often violent and disturbing course of the couple's anguish as they immerse themselves in nature and act out their deep suffering in a sequence of increasingly bizarre and brutal rituals. 'Melancholia' (2011) portrays the effects of depression on two sisters, Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Claire (Gainsbourg). Played out in two acts, the film opens with the wedding of Justine and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård): a sumptuous affair paid for by Justine's sister Claire (Gainsbourg) and her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland). However, when Justine notices a strange star in the sky, she starts behaving oddly and the wedding is ruined. The film's second act follows Justine, now extremely weak and ill, after she goes to live with her sister. As Claire and John struggle to deal with Justine's condition, astronomy buff Claire becomes increasingly concerned about a large blue planet that is threatening to collide with the earth. 'Nymphomaniac: The Director's Cut - Volumes I & II' (2013) is von Trier's cut of his controversial and sexually-explicit drama starring Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgård. When the well-read and knowledgeable bachelor Seligman (Skarsgård) finds a beaten and bruised young woman in an alleyway, he takes her home to his flat to tend to her injuries. The woman introduces herself as Joe (Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, whose carefree and hedonistic lifestyle has led to her situation. Seligman presses Joe to tell her story and she proceeds to recount her experiences, from her childhood up to the present, where sex has been the most important thing in her life. 'The House That Jack Built' (2018) follows failed architect-turned obsessive serial killer Jack (Matt Dillon) as he recounts five grisly murders he carried out in Washington during the 1970s and '80s and attempts to transform his victims into what he perceives as the ultimate work of art. Finally, the documentary 'The Five Obstructions' (2003) takes an investigative journey into the phenomenon of 'documentary', based on manifestos written by each director.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray / Box Set</i>

In 'Barking Dogs Never Bite' (2000) unemployed academic Ko Yun-ju (Sung-jae Lee) becomes agitated by his neighbour's dog and decides to take drastic action to silence it. Meanwhile, Park Hyun-nam (Doona Bae) begins investigating when a number of canines are reported missing by residents of her apartment complex. In 'Memories of Murder' (2003), set in 1986 in a small town in Gyeonggi Province, Detective Park Doo-man (Kang-ho Song) and his partner, Detective Cho Yong-koo (Roe-ha Kim), investigate the brutal rape and murder of two women discovered in a ditch. They are aided in their investigation by Seoul detective Seo Tae-yoon (Sang-Kyung Kim), whose methods clash with Park's. When another body is discovered it becomes apparent the detectives are searching for an elusive serial killer, and they find themselves investigating the deaths of ten women over the course of six years. 'The Host' (2006) follows snack bar owner Gang-du Park (Song) and his family as they are forced to fight back against a mysterious monster which emerges from the Han River in Seoul. Fearing the worst after his daughter Hyun-seo (Ko Asung) is captured and carried away by the unidentified creature, Gang-du is left shocked when he receives a phone call from her explaining she is being held captive by the monster deep in the sewers. Spurred on by Hyun-seo's unexpected call, Gang-du gathers together the remaining members of his family and bravely sets off into the sewers in a bid to rescue her. In 'Mother' (2009), in a remote village in South Korea, a lonely single mother looks after her mentally handicapped son Do-jun (Weon Bin) while scraping a living as an acupuncturist. But her simple, poverty-stricken life is suddenly plunged into chaos when her son is arrested for the brutal murder of a local schoolgirl. Convinced that he has been set up, the mother sets out to prove her son's innocence to the police, who seem more interested in closing the case than in researching other possible leads. In 'Snowpiercer' (2013), following a failed attempt to halt global warming that sparked a new ice age in 2014, the last humans on Earth circumnavigate the globe aboard the Snowpiercer train. 17 years on, with the train rigidly divided by class, the poor inhabitants of the train's tail section, led by Curtis (Chris Evans), decide to rebel and demand better treatment and living conditions. After freeing security expert Namgoong (Song) and his daughter Yona (Asung), the band of rebels make their way to the front of the train in search of its creator, Wilford (Ed Harris). Finally, in 'Parasite' (2019) Kim Ki-taek (Song) sees a way out of his struggling family's poverty when he is employed by the wealthy Park family to tutor their daughter Da-hye (Ji-so Jung). He quickly ingratiates himself with the Park family and convinces them to employ the rest of his impoverished family disguised as his acquaintances. However, their scheme to infiltrate the Park family's lavish life soon turns awry when their true identities come under scrutiny. 'The Guitar Mongoloid' (2004) follows a group of strangers, each leading non-conventional lives, as they go about their days in the city of Jöteborg. 'Involuntary' (2008) explores the nature of group behaviour and peer pressure through various intertwining storylines. Birthday boy Villmar (Villmar Bjorkman) is injured by a firework but refuses to let the incident ruin his party; Leffe (Leif Edlund Johansson) and his friends go a bit too far in a drunken prank; two teenage schoolgirls get into trouble after dressing up and posing for a provocative photo shoot; and a teacher delivers a lesson on the power of peer pressure which cites something uncomfortably close to home as its example. In 'Play' (2011), three schoolchildren find themselves the victims of a group of young black con artists. After approaching three local boys - two white and one of Asian descent - in a Gothenburg shopping mall, a group of black teenagers accuse one of the boys of owning a stolen mobile phone belonging to one of their brothers, demanding that they accompany them on a short trip so that the brother can resolve the issue. Over the coming hours, as the streetwise black youths play a psychological game, preying on the fears and stereotypes of their victims without ever resorting to direct violence, the reserved, anxious-not-to-offend local kids are led on a march through some of Gothenburg's more unfamiliar areas. In 'Force Majeure' (2014), a Swedish family are enjoying a ski holiday in the alps when they are faced with an impending avalanche on the mountainside. Fearing for their lives, matriarch Ebba (Lisa Loven Kingsli) rushes to protect her children Harry (Vincent Wettergren) and Vera (Clara Wettergren) while her husband Tomas (Johannes Kuhnke) flees the site of the disaster after saving his phone. When the life-threatening avalanche turns out to be little more than snow clouds, Tomas must answer for abandoning his loved ones while struggling to regain their trust and his own status at the head of the family. 'The Square' (2017) follows Christian (Claes Bang), a curator for a prestigious art museum in Stockholm who is putting together a new installation entitled 'The Square', a space symbolising trust and safety where everyone in society looks out for one another. While Christian hunts for his expensive stolen possessions after being the victim of a petty street crime, the publicity campaign for the museum's new exhibition begins to gain unintended viral attention. Finally, in 'Triangle of Sadness' (2022), high fashion models Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean) are invited on a luxury cruise where they meet an assortment of the upper strata of society. All seems to be going well until disaster strikes, resulting in the ship's crew and passengers being stranded on an island. 'A Swedish Love Story' (1970) charts the relationship that develops between Stockholm teenagers Annika (Ann-Sofie Kylin) and Par (Rolf Sohlman) after meeting at a family gathering in the countryside at the height of summer. The two youngsters carve out their own passion-infused reality, oblivious to the disillusionment and social tensions of the world around them. In 'Songs from the Second Floor' (2000) a man burns down his furniture store, a huge traffic jam clogs the city's streets, hordes of people arrive at the airport with their possessions piled high on luggage trolleys and respectable businessmen congregate to sacrifice a young girl. Proceeding from one absurd scenario to the next, the vision of a society coming apart at the seams follows a selection of characters searching for meaning in their lives. 'You, the Living' (2007) explores the grandeur of existence in 50 surreal short sketches. Following a group including a teacher, carpenter, thief and psychiatrist the story explores the humanity and common threads that link their everyday lives. 'A Pigeon Sat On a Branch Reflecting On Existence' (2014) consists of 12 self-contained vignettes and follows characters including Jonathan (Holger Andersson) and Sam (Nils Wesblom), two travelling salesmen who make a living selling joke products. Their stock is limited, however, as they only have three lacklustre items for sale: vampire teeth, canned laughter and a rubber mask, which they take from shop to shop whilst struggling to obtain orders. Meanwhile, King Karl XII of Sweden (Viktor Gyllenberg) rides into a bar to procure the barman's services in the war against Russia. 'About Endlessness' (2019), comprised of a series of vignettes, follows characters including a couple flying over the ruins of Cologne, a middle-aged Catholic priest experiencing a crisis of faith, Hitler in his final days, soldiers being marched to a prisoner-of war-camp and a father and daughter going to a birthday party. Finally, 'Being a Human Person' (2020) explores Andersson's life and work as he wraps production on his final feature, 'About Endlessness' (2019). Aged 76, Andersson reflects on his life and the themes explored in his work, while his frequent collaborators provide an insight into his idiosyncratic working methods.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>

In the black comedy 'Lift to the Scaffold' (1958) a crime of passion goes horribly wrong when the killer gets trapped in a lift. As Julien (Maurice Ronet)'s lover, Florence Carala (Jeanne Moreau) - who also happens to be the victim's wife - is out searching for him in Paris, a young hood and his girl steal the killer's car, complicating matters further. In 'The Lovers' (1958) Moreau stars as a woman desperate to free herself from a dull and unhappy marriage. So she heads for the excitement of Paris with her friends where one day a chance encounter gives her the excitement she has been craving. 'Zazie dans le Métro' (1960) follows the story of Zazie (Catherine Demongeot), a ten-year-old kid who desperately wants to ride on the Paris Métro during her holidays. But when she finds out there is a 24 hour strike she runs riot through the city. In 'Le Feu Follet' (1963) a recovering alcoholic (Ronet) decides to commit suicide. He spends 24 hours wandering through Paris and visiting old friends one last time, hoping to find some meaning to life and a reason to go on living. In 'Murmur of the Heart' (1971) Laurent Chevalier (Benoît Ferreux) is a precocious 15-year-old living in the 1950s, who growing up in a boisterous loving family, travels with his mother (Lea Massari) to a fashionable spa town to recuperate from a heart murmur. But once there, motherly love transforms into sexual longing. In 'Lacome, Lucien' (1974) young French peasant Lucien Lacombe (Pierre Blaise) sees a chance for social advancement by joining the Gestapo during the French Occupation. However, his position is placed under threat when he starts dating the daughter of a Jewish tailor - a liaison that could have disastrous repercussions for them both. In 'Black Moon' (1975) teenager Lily (Cathryn Harrison) finds herself in a world where there is an ongoing war between males and females and flees to the countryside to escape. There, she has a series of surreal encounters with the characters occupying the country estate. 'My Dinner With Andre' (1981) takes the form of a dinner conversation between theatre director Andre Gregory and actor-playwright Wallace Shawn, two friends who are catching up with each other after six years without contact. In 'Au Revoir Les Enfants' (1987), set during the Nazi occupation of France, young teenager Jean (Raphael Fejito) returns to his Catholic boarding school after some time off and strikes up a friendship with new classmate Julien (Gaspard Manesse). After some initial hostilities and friction between the pair, Julien learns that Jean is in fact Jewish, and one of three boys being offered a safe haven by the sympathetic headmaster. However, when Gestapo officers arrive at the school, they begin to delve deeper into the lives of the students and the priests watching over them. 'Milou in May' (1990) depicts the collapse of one family and their country, during February 1968, when the family meet at the funeral of Milou (Michel Piccoli)'s mother. In 'Cleo from 5 to 7' (1962), while waiting for the result of a medical test French singer Cleo (Corinne Marchand) spends a couple of hours - shown in real time - wandering through the streets of Paris. Along the way she meets up with her lover and with her composers, visits her model friend Dorothee (Dorothee Blank), has a brief affair with a passing soldier, drinks coffee and buys a new hat with her maid before finally meeting up with her doctor to receive the diagnosis. 'Vagabond' (1985) tells the story of the final few weeks of the life of female drifter Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire), who feels incapable of participating in ordinary French society. Beginning with her death, the film presents Mona's final perambulations through the lives of various characters, all of whom offered different potential for escape. 'One Sings, the Other Doesn't' (1977) charts the friendship of two women against the backdrop of the feminist movement of the 1960s and '70s. When middle-class teenager Pomme (Valérie Mairesse) helps her troubled 20-something neighbour Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard) to find the money for an abortion, a lifelong friendship between the two women ensues. In 'Jacquot De Nantes' (1992) the childhood of director Jacques Demy is recreated by his widow, Varda. Shot in black and white on location in Demy's childhood home, the film is intercut with actual footage of the young Demy and with scenes from his early films. In 'La Pointe Courte' (1955), Varda's directorial debut, the semi-documentary explores the complexities of a marital relationship. Set against the backdrop of daily life in the Mediterranean fishing village of La Pointe Courte, the film follows young married couple Parisian Elle (Silvia Monfort) and local man Lui (Philippe Noiret) as they struggle to adapt to their changing lives after making the decision to move back to his birthplace. In 'The Gleaners and I' (2000) Varda examines the lives of those who live off-grid in France. Gleaning is the act of gathering the leftovers from a harvest after the main, profitable crop has been taken away by the farmer. As well as examining the lives of gleaners, who subsist from the remnants of modern agriculture, Varda extends the metaphor to enquire about those who live by more modern forms of gleaning. In 'Le Bonheur' (1965) François (Jean-Claude Drouot), a happily-married carpenter with a young family, finds himself falling in love with telephone operator Emilie (Marie-France Boyer). As he basks in the joy and passion of his new relationship, he finds that far from feeling alienated from his family, his feelings for them are actually enhanced and intensified. But when he tries to share his joyful discovery with his wife, her reaction is far from the delight that François hoped for. Finally, in 'The Beaches of Agnès' (2008) Varda relays her own story by employing a range of filmic techniques, including the re-staging of dramatic events in her life and the use of symbolic visual sets that combine to flesh out her thoughts and concepts, while at the same time giving an insight into her creative processes through the years.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray / Box Set</i>
