A Stalker (Aleksandr Kaidanovsky) leads writer Pisatel (Anatoli Solonitsyn) and a Professor (Nikolai Grinko) through an industrial wasteland called the Zone, in search of a room where truth is contained and wishes are said to be granted to anyone who enters. After being chased away by the company's violent owner John Dickinson (Robert Mitchum), Blake becomes involved in a series of chaotic and violent confrontations which leave him wounded and close to death. However, his fortunes change when he is befriended by a Native American outcast called Nobody (Gary Farmer) who vows to be his guide for the rest of his journey. Small-town lawyer Paul Biegler (Stewart) courts controversy when he agrees to defend army lieutenant Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara) who is facing charges of murder. It is alleged that Manion killed a bartender whom he believed to have raped his wife (Lee Remick), and the evidence assembled by the hard-headed big city prosecutor Claude Dancer (Scott) seems to confirm this. Southern Queen headed for New York, they have their sights set on the socially awkward Charles Pike (Fonda), who is heir to his father's brewery fortune.
