He is met by his friend Octave (Renoir) and together they attend a weekend retreat hosted by the Marquis de la Chesnaye (Marcel Dalio), the husband of the woman André loves. At a masked ball, a series of romantic liaisons, rivalries and misunderstandings end in tragedy - though it is of little care or consequence to the bourgeoisie.
