When Larkin is kidnapped before he can be extradited, Brannigan charges through the city as he attempts to locate the gangster and finds himself at odds with Scotland Yard's Commander Charles Swann (Richard Attenborough). Accompanied by his daughter-in-law, Marianne (Ingrid Thulin) who is travelling to meet her estranged husband, Isak finds himself the subject of unsettling visions from his past, recalling lost loves and his own failed marriage. After having a baby by him that dies in infancy, Tess runs away and meets a farmer named Angel Clare (Peter Firth) with whom she falls in love and marries. When she tells Angel about her past he is heartbroken and hastily rejects her, leaving Tess to return to Alec. Knowing that bandits are planning to attack their village after the coming harvest, its inhabitants hire a group of seven samurai to protect them. Led by Kambei (Takashi Shimura), the group includes four hardened warriors, Kambei's new disciple and Kikuchiyo (Toshirô Mifune), the orphaned son of a farmer who is posing as a samurai and is determined to prove his worth. The samurai begin arming and training the villagers as well as fortifying their homes as they prepare for the coming attack, fully aware that the odds are stacked against them. Having witnessed first-hand the horror and destruction of the First World War, scientist Jean Diaz (Victor Francen) is determined to never allow the world to be consumed by such chaos again. To this end he develops a device which he is confident will eliminate warfare forever. However, as the governments of the world begin gearing up for yet another all-consuming conflict, Diaz's device is used as just another weapon of war.
