But when he learns of the death of a former lover through her widowed husband, Jep is at once confronted with the fragility of life and the certainty of death, making him reconsider his present situation and careless existence. However, when Justine notices a strange star in the sky, she starts behaving oddly and the wedding is ruined. The film's second act follows Justine, now extremely weak and ill, after she goes to live with her sister. As Claire and John struggle to deal with Justine's condition, astronomy buff Claire becomes increasingly concerned about a large blue planet that is threatening to collide with the earth. When Arletty becomes ill and is taken into hospital, Marcel takes in eight-year-old Idrissa (Blondin Miguel), an illegal immigrant boy from Africa who is trying to get to his mother in London. Once there, Vera tells Alex that she is pregnant, and he believes the baby cannot be his, causing Alex to face huge personal dilemmas, wondering whether to forgive her or exact revenge. Acting on advice from his malevolent brother, Alex demands that Vera terminate the pregnancy.
