Jep Gambardella (Toni Servillo) is an accomplished journalist who has made his name and reputation through his work and a largely successful novel he published as a young man. Presently a bachelor in his mid-60s, Jep spends much of his time around the upper bourgeoisie living in Rome and engages in a hedonistic and liberated life. But when he learns of the death of a former lover through her widowed husband, Jep is at once confronted with the fragility of life and the certainty of death, making him reconsider his present situation and careless existence. In 'Suzanne's Career' (1963), a young student finds himself consumed by jealousy and resentment over his friend's treatment of a beautiful young woman. In 'The Girl at the Monceau Bakery' (1963), a young man's affections are divided between two women. In 'La Collectioneuse' (1967), two young men are staying in a friend's villa in St Tropez when a young woman comes to stay, invited by the absent owner. She turns out to be a 'collector' of men, sleeping with a different man every night, and the two young men decide to offer her moral counselling. 'My Night at Maud's' (1969) tells the story of a Catholic engineer determined to marry a woman he has seen in church. The eye-opening (and ultimately chaste) night he spends with the independent divorcee Maud robs him of the courage of his convictions. 'Claire's Knee' (1970) details a middle-aged man's passion for his friend's teenage daughter. Holidaying at Lac d'Annecy, diplomat Jerome (Jean-Claude Brialy) meets his old friend Aurora (Aurora Cornu) and accepts a wager in which he must enter into a flirtation with besotted teenager Laura (Beatrice Romand). However, things get more serious when Jerome develops feelings for Laura's sister Claire (Laurence de Monaghan), and begins to focus all his energies upon finding a way to caress the young woman's knee. 'Love in the Afternoon' (1972), the last in the sequence, is a subtle study of love and monogamy. Bernard Verley stars as Frederic, a bourgeois businessman living in the suburbs of Paris with his wife Helene (Francoise Verley), a teacher who is expecting their second child. Their marriage is happy and loving, but Frederic can't stop fantasising about other women. When Chloe (Zouzou), his beautiful ex-girlfriend, returns to Paris after working in America as a model, she starts seeing Frederic again, and they begin to meet in the afternoons on a platonic basis to talk about their lives. Eventually Chloe, who is trapped in a relationship with a man she no longer loves, tries to seduce Frederic, and he is faced with a decision that is both complex and achingly simple.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>

In 'The Kid With a Bike' (2011), an eleven-year-old boy is in search of a family. In an attempt to escape the state-run care home he has ended up in, rebellious pre-teen Cyril Catoul (Thomas Doret) tries without success to track down his deadbeat father; and in the process, he meets small-town hairdresser Samantha (Cécile De France). In 'The Silence of Lorna' (2008), Arta Dobroshi stars as Lorna, a young Albanian woman stuck in a marriage of convenience with junkie Belgian Claudy (Jérémie Renier). It turns out that this is a strategic marriage set up by a Russian gangster, and that the eventual plan is for Claudy to be murdered and Lorna to then re-marry the gangster. In 'The Child' (2005), Bruno (Renier) is a young petty thief who has fathered a baby by his 18-year-old girlfriend, Sonia (Déborah Francois). Needing money, Bruno commits a shocking atrocity and its repercussions force him into a desperate search for atonement. In 'The Son' (2002), a middle-aged carpenter (Olivier Gourmet) takes on a young apprentice, Francis (Morgan Marinne), knowing that he is the murderer of his son. In 'Rosetta' (1999), the teenage titular character (Emilie Dequenne) struggles to look after herself and her alcoholic mother on a caravan site in present-day Belgium. When she is made redundant, Rosetta befriends waffle salesman Riquet (Fabrizio Rongione) and manages to find another job, but this does not last long, and she eventually finds herself considering suicide as a means of escape. Finally, in 'La Promesse' (1996) 15-year-old Igor (Renier) helps his father, Roger (Gourmet), employ illegal immigrants to work on building sites. When one of the workers is seriously injured after a fall from some scaffolding, Igor promises to look after the man's wife (Assita Ouedraogo) and child; an encounter which gradually shows him the gulf between his own values and those of the workers.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

'A Tale of Springtime' (1989) is the story of a friendship between a high school philosophy teacher and a music student. Caught between apartments, philosophy teacher Jeanne (Anne Teyssedre) attends a party, where a young girl, Natasha (Florence Darel), invites her to stay at the flat she shares with her father, Igor (Hugues Quester). Presently Jeanne finds herself witness to, then participating in, recriminatory scenes between daughter, father and his youthful lover, Eve (Eloise Bennett): jealous Natasha detests Eve, accusing her of theft, while Igor seems more than willing to be left with Jeanne. Rohmer examines the hidden motives and analyses the consequences of their actions, finding nobody wholly innocent. In 'A Winter's Tale' (1992), Parisian hairdresser Felicie (Charlotte Very) has a wonderful holiday romance with a man called Charles (Frédéric Van Den Driessche) in Brittany. She discovers she is pregnant but, through a mix-up over addresses, she loses contact with her lover. As her daughter grows up she finds it impossible to settle with another man, although she wavers between two suitors, and daydreams of Charles finding them again. In 'A Summer's Tale' (1996), Gaspard (Melvil Poupard), a bored young man on holiday in Brittany, is invited to a party by Margot (Amanda Langlet) while he is waiting for his classmate Lena (Aurelia Nolin), with whom he believes he is in love. At Margot's party Gaspard meets another girl, Solène (Gwenaelle Simon), who is also attracted to him. When Lena arrives too, Gaspard is forced to choose between the three girls. In the fourth and final instalment, 'An Autumn Tale' (1998), happily-married Rhone Valley wine-grower Isabelle (Marie Rivière) wants to see her widowed friend Magali (Béatrice Romand) matched up. To this end, she secretly places a lonely hearts ad in a paper on Magali's behalf and chooses a man for her. Misunderstandings ensue, however, when Magali sees Isabelle acting suspiciously with a mystery guest at her daughter's wedding. Koji Yakusho stars as respected samurai warrior Shinzaemon Shimada, who gathers together 13 skilled assassins to bring down the evil Lord Naritsugu (Goro Inagaki), a merciless killer who gets his kicks from brutally murdering women and children. The film ends with a 45-minute battle sequence in which the 13 assassins take on an army of 200 men, dispensing with them in a profusion of inventive and surprising ways.<br/><br/><i>Typ: Blu-ray</i>

Dadan will agree to cancel the debt if Matko arranges for his son, Zare (Florijan Ajdini) to marry Dadan's daughter, who is so tiny that she has been nicknamed 'Ladybird'. Gleaning is the act of gathering the leftovers from a harvest after the main, profitable crop has been taken away by the farmer. As well as examining the lives of actual gleaners, who subsist from the remnants of modern agriculture, Varda visits those who live by more modern forms of gleaning. She meets people who mine household and commercial waste for a living, a man who has lived almost completely on discarded food for over a decade despite having a job and several other intriguing characters. The picture that emerges is of an alternative form of life to throwaway, consumerist culture and a value system based on essentials rather than excess.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>
