'A Tale of Springtime' (1989) is the story of a friendship between a high school philosophy teacher and a music student. Caught between apartments, philosophy teacher Jeanne (Anne Teyssedre) attends a party, where a young girl, Natasha (Florence Darel), invites her to stay at the flat she shares with her father, Igor (Hugues Quester). Presently Jeanne finds herself witness to, then participating in, recriminatory scenes between daughter, father and his youthful lover, Eve (Eloise Bennett): jealous Natasha detests Eve, accusing her of theft, while Igor seems more than willing to be left with Jeanne. Rohmer examines the hidden motives and analyses the consequences of their actions, finding nobody wholly innocent. In 'A Winter's Tale' (1992), Parisian hairdresser Felicie (Charlotte Very) has a wonderful holiday romance with a man called Charles (Frédéric Van Den Driessche) in Brittany. She discovers she is pregnant but, through a mix-up over addresses, she loses contact with her lover. As her daughter grows up she finds it impossible to settle with another man, although she wavers between two suitors, and daydreams of Charles finding them again. In 'A Summer's Tale' (1996), Gaspard (Melvil Poupard), a bored young man on holiday in Brittany, is invited to a party by Margot (Amanda Langlet) while he is waiting for his classmate Lena (Aurelia Nolin), with whom he believes he is in love. At Margot's party Gaspard meets another girl, Solène (Gwenaelle Simon), who is also attracted to him. When Lena arrives too, Gaspard is forced to choose between the three girls. In the fourth and final instalment, 'An Autumn Tale' (1998), happily-married Rhone Valley wine-grower Isabelle (Marie Rivière) wants to see her widowed friend Magali (Béatrice Romand) matched up. To this end, she secretly places a lonely hearts ad in a paper on Magali's behalf and chooses a man for her. Misunderstandings ensue, however, when Magali sees Isabelle acting suspiciously with a mystery guest at her daughter's wedding. In 'Three Colours: Blue' (1993) Julie (Juliette Binoche) has her world turned upside down when her husband and daughter are killed in a car crash. She sells the family home and moves to a Parisian suburb, attempting to build a new life for herself. But her efforts to start afresh are dragged down by memories from the past and fear of the present. In 'Three Colours: White' (1994) Karol Karol (Zbigniew Zamachowski) is a Polish hairdresser living in Paris. He has just been divorced and kicked out onto the streets by his beautiful young wife Dominique (Julie Delpy). Whilst begging on the Metro, Karol is befriended by his fellow countryman Mikolaj, who agrees to smuggle him back to Warsaw in a trunk. Once home Karol begins to rebuild his life, and, by cunning means, starts to make enormous profits in Poland's new free-market system. He then puts his newly-acquired wealth to use and starts to enact a complex plan to bring Dominique back into his life. Finally, in 'Three Colours: Red' (1994) fashion model Valentine (Irene Jacob) accidentally runs over a dog. She takes him to a vet, gets him patched up and then tries to return him to his owner. It turns out that the owner is Joseph Kern (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a retired judge who lives alone and listens in on his neighbours' telephone conversations. Valentine and Joseph slowly become friends; meanwhile, one of Joseph's neighbours cheats on her boyfriend, a young law student who will have an important effect on Valentine's life.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

Vladimir Ilin stars as Dr Ragin, a psychiatric doctor in a suburban hospital who becomes increasingly drawn into deep philosophical discussions with the patients on his ward, particularly Gromov (Aleksey Vertkov), a highly intelligent yet extremely disturbed patient suffering from paranoid delusions. Over time Ragin begins to disengage with reality and neglect his medical duties, begging the question of where the line should be drawn between introspection and insanity. The film transposes the original 19th century setting of Chekhov's story to present-day Moscow, and weaves documentary footage of conversations with real patients into the dramatic narrative.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>

The thriller 'The Night is Young' (1986), follows petty thief and street hustler Alex (Denis Lavant) plotting to steal a new miracle cure for an AIDS-like virus on behalf of his gangster friend Marc (Michel Piccoli), attracting the notice of a mysterious American woman who also wants the serum. In 'Holy Motors' (2012), Lavant stars as the man of many identities Monsieur Oscar. Driven around Paris by his chauffeur Celine (Edith Scob), Oscar makes use of an elaborate dressing room in his limousine to assume the identity of a number of different characters. At various points throughout the journey he appears as a businessman, a beggar, an assassin, a father and an old woman and in each disguise steps out of his limousine to engage with the world while embarking on bizarre adventures that include kidnapping a beautiful model, Kay (Eva Mendes). But what exactly lies at the root of Oscar's extraordinary behaviour? 'Boy Meets Girl' (1984) is the darkly comic love story which involves two strangers (Lavant and Mireille Perrier) who are destined to meet after their relationships break down. In 'Nymphomaniac - Volumes I and II' (2013), when the well-read and knowledgeable bachelor Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård) finds a beaten and bruised young woman in an alleyway, he takes her home to his flat to tend to her injuries. The woman introduces herself as Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, whose carefree and hedonistic lifestyle has led to her situation. Seligman presses Joe to tell her story and she proceeds to recount her experiences, from her childhood up to the present, where sex has been the most important thing in her life. The supporting cast includes Shia La Beouf, Christian Slater, Uma Thurman and Willem Dafoe. In 'Melancholia' (2011), the film's first act opens with the wedding of Justine (Kirsten Dunst) and Michael (Alexander Skarsgård): a sumptuous affair paid for by Justine's sister Claire (Gainsbourg) and her husband John (Kiefer Sutherland). However, when Justine notices a strange star in the sky, she starts behaving oddly and the wedding is ruined. The film's second act follows Justine, now extremely weak and ill, after she goes to live with her sister. As Claire and John struggle to deal with Justine's condition, astronomy buff Claire becomes increasingly concerned about a large blue planet that is threatening to collide with the earth. Charlotte Rampling and John Hurt co-star. 'Antichrist' (2009) stars Dafoe and Gainsbourg as a couple grieving the death of their young son. The mother is initially admitted to hospital following the incident, but her husband - a therapist - insists on taking her to their remote forest cabin, 'Eden', and looking after her himself. Presented in four chapters with a prologue and epilogue, the film charts the often violent and disturbing course of the couple's anguish as they immerse themselves in nature and act out their deep suffering in a sequence of increasingly bizarre and brutal rituals. Lastly, 'Breaking the Waves' (1996) is set in 1970's Scotland, and follows young Bess (Emily Watson) as she meets and falls in love with oil rig worker Jan (Skarsgård). Despite opposition, the couple marry, and when Jan returns to the rigs Bess counts the days until his return. However, their relationship is put to the test when Jan is paralysed in an accident and he urges Bess to take another lover and relate their sexual acts to him...<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>

'The Beaches of Agnés' (2008) is an intimate and inventive autobiographical account of Varda's life. A member of the French New Wave and married to fellow director Jacques Demy, Varda pioneered the 'cine-writing' style of filmmaking, carefully planning every aspect of the film in order to achieve the greatest emotional response. Taking a detour from the standard forms of storytelling, Varda relates her own story by employing a range of filmic techniques, including the re-staging of dramatic events in her life, and the use of symbolic visual sets that combine to flesh out her thoughts and concepts, while at the same time giving an insight into her creative processes through the years. Philippe Maron stars in 'Jacquot de Nantes' (1992), in which Varda recreates the childhood of her late husband, Demy. Shot in black and white on location in Demy's boyhood home, the film is intercut with actual footage of the young Demy and with scenes from his early films. The drama 'L'une Chante, L'Autre Pas' (1977) is set against the backdrop of the women's movement in 1970s France, and tracks the friendship of two women from very different backgrounds, Pomme (Valerie Mairesse) and Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard). Finally, the docudrama 'Vagabond' (1985) tells the story of the final few weeks of female drifter Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire), who feels incapable of participating in ordinary French society. Beginning with her death, the film presents Mona's final perambulations through the lives of various characters, all of whom offered different potential for escape, options that we know Mona did not take. Through these flashbacks Varda presents her own thesis on the female free spirit in the form of Mona's life and death.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD / Box Set</i>
