Texas Ranger David Kingston (Hemsworth) is sent to investigate a string of murders and mysterious disappearances. Kingston sets out to find a preacher named Abraham Brant (Harrelson) who is a force to be reckoned with and Kingston discovers the local townsfolk are afraid to cross him. When Kingston was a boy, the preacher killed his father in what was known as a 'Helena Duel', where men are made to fight with a knife in one hand and tied to each other's wrists with the other. When Melquiades is shot and killed in suspicious circumstances, Pete takes the law into his own hands and kidnaps psychotic border patrolman Mike Norton (Barry Pepper).
