While Igor can stick to the story thanks to the distraction of his work, Anna finds this more difficult as she mingles with the people around her and realises they are no different to herself and her husband. Maine persuades his producer to give Esther a screen test, in which she emerges victorious. He suggests a name change and so Esther Blodgett becomes Vicki Lester, along with an image overhaul, however, as her career takes off, his grinds to a halt. The pair start off by carrying out petty crimes and selling their goods to criminal Putty Nose (Murray Kinnell) but when Prohibition arrives in 1920 they move into the more lucrative business of bootlegging, working for Paddy Ryan (Robert Emmett O'Connor) and Samuel 'Nails' Nathan (Leslie Fenton).
