Doctor Artur Planck (Fiennes) and his family are Polish Jews, on the run from the Nazis in 1941. They find a hiding place at the farm of Emilia (Harrison), a woman whose husband left to fight and hasn't returned. When Artur and Emilia's friendship develops into an affair, Artur is put in a difficult position.
