In 'Once Upon a Time in China' (1991), folk hero Wong Fei Hung (Li) takes a stance against the imperial forces who have invaded China. In 'Once Upon a Time in China II' (1992) Wong faces the White Lotus Society, who are carrying out a host of attacks on anyone who is influenced by Western culture. He also encounters revolutionary Sun Yat-Sen (Zhang Tielin), who is trying to establish a Chinese Republic and Wong offers to protect him. Finally, in 'Once Upon a Time in China III' (1992) a competition is staged in Beijing to showcase Chinese martial arts in an attempt to restore national pride.
