En seriemördare på flykt från polisen gömmer sig i en leksaksaffär, där han med hjälp av voodoo överför sin själ till dockan Chucky. Den hamnar hos pojken Andy - som därmed blir den enda som seriemördaren kan byta kropp med. Andys mamma blir orolig när pojken behandlar den otäckt skrattande dockan som en människa.
