Två forna dödsfiender tvingas stå ut med varandra i de vildare delarna av den amerikanska västern. När en legendarisk armékapten får uppdraget att genom flera delstater eskortera en döende cheyennehövning till dennes hemtrakter och begravningsplats måste de två männen samarbeta för att överleva den strapatsfyllda färden.
