Egeus (David Sterne) is unhappy because his daughter Hermia (Holly Earl) is passionately in love with Lysander (Harry Jarvis) and refuses to marry her suitor Demetrius (Tyger Drew-Honey). Hermia's friend Helena (Tamzin Merchant) does love Demetrius, but her affection is unrequited. The four lovers escape into the woods, with Hermia and Lysander determined to elope and Helena and Demetrius in pursuit. Meanwhile, the fairy king and queen Oberon (Robert Lindsay) and Titania (Juliet Aubrey) are quarrelling, and their dispute entangles the young lovers as well as a group of amateur actors rehearsing a play.
