Mitt under festligheterna under nyårsafton drabbas världens största oceangående lyxkryssare, Poseidon, ut för en jättevåg. Skeppet kantrar och hamnar upp-och-ned. POSEIDON var en kolossalsuccé när den kom 1972, bara "Gudfadern" spelade in mer pengar i USA, och på den inflationsreglerade topplistan över USAs största succéer någonsin ligger den 47 år senare fortfarande på topp 100 (plats 84 närmare bestämt).<br/><br/>Producenten bakom filmen var Irwin Allen, ofta kallad "Katastrofkungen", som stod bakom en rad framgångsrika katastroffilmer. Två år senare producerade han även "Skyskrapan brinner!" och ytterligare fem år senare uppföljaren till "S.O.S. POSEIDON", det vill säga "Poseidons hemlighet" med bland andra Michael Caine och Sally Field, som han även regisserade.<br/><br/>I S.O.S. POSEIDON leder tvåfaldigt Oscarbelönade Gene Hackman en ensemble bestående av stjärnor som Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Roddy McDowall, Stella Stevens, Shelley Winters, Leslie Nielsen och många fler.<br/><br/>Filmens makalösa och garanterat datafusk-fria specialeffekter belönades inte oväntat med en Oscar. Dessutom nominerades den till ytterliga åtta Oscar, däribland för Shelley Winters biroll och John Williams musik.
