As a nine-year-old, Calogero (Francis Capra) witnesses a murder committed by local mob leader Sonny (Chazz Palminteri) and when he remains quiet about what he saw after questioning from the police Sonny, by way of thanks, offers the boy's father Lorenzo (De Niro) a better paying job. However, Lorenzo declines the offer and warns Sonny and his men to stay away from his son.
