As he converses with bartender Eddie (Bobby Cannavale), he bitterly mourns the end of his creative partnership with Richard Rodgers (Scott) who has moved on due to Lorenz's drinking and unreliability and wrote 'Oklahoma!' with Oscar Hammerstein II (Simon Delaney) instead of Lorenz. Meanwhile, Lorenz hopes to at least succeed in finally winning the love of the much younger Elizabeth Weiland (Qualley) but soon begins to realise that his night is destined to end in complete and utter failure. With an outline of a story about an aspiring gangster on hand but no completed script, he casts Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin) and Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch) and fights to bring his vision to life. The war on drugs has been lost, and when a reluctant undercover cop is ordered to spy on those he is closest to, the toll that the mission takes on his sanity is too great to comprehend. Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is a narcotics officer who is issued an order to spy on his friends and report back to headquarters. In addition to being a cop, though, Arctor is also an addict. His drug of choice is a ubiquitous street drug called Substance D, a drug known to cause bizarre hallucinations and produce split personalities in its users.
