Azuza, Kalifornien, 1979. Den 15-årige Rocky Dennis lider av en mycket sällsynt sjukdom som förstorar och förvränger hans huvud. Trots alla påfrestningar försöker Rocky leva ett normalt liv. Tillsammans med sin mamma Rusty har Rocky sina bästa vänner i ett motorcykelgäng. Rusty har dock svårt att få ordning på sitt liv, och nyttjar droger. Trots de varma känslorna mellan mor och son är inte Rocky överdrivet förtjust i moderns vanor. Rocky beslutar sig för att anta ett erbjudande om att bli ledare på ett sommarläger för blinda.
