Magnolia är regissören Paul Thomas Andersons första film efter Boogie nights och belönades med tre Oscars-nomineringar, en Golden Globe och Guldbjörnen vid filmfestivalen i Berlin. Handlingen kretsar kring en rad personer under en helt vanlig dag i södra Kalifornien. I centrum står Earl Partridge (Jason Robards), en döende man som håller på att göra upp med sitt förflutna i livets slutskede, bland annat med sin övergivne son som spelas av Tom Cruise.
