As Giovanni Pontano (Mastroianni) celebrates the publication of his latest book, he and his wife Lidia (Moreau) visit a seriously ill friend in hospital. From there they progress to a book signing for Giovanni and later a party but Lidia remains aloof. When they leave the party at dawn, the two are finally forced to confront the state of their marriage and consider their future together. Vittoria (Monica Vitti) is a young woman who breaks up with her lover Ricardo (Francisco Rabal), a bookish intellectual, and instead takes up with brash stockbroker Piero (Alain Delon). However, there are still emotional ties between Vittoria and Ricardo. The final breakdown of Vittoria's emotional state is symbolically mirrored by Antonioni's montage of a deserted, dying city.<br/><br/><i>Typ: DVD</i>
