After being released from prison, Floyd Gambino (Testi) robs a jewellery store with his ruthless partner Joe Malcomb (Wallach) and a police officer is killed in the process. The two split up and flee the scene and Floyd, who has the diamonds, is forced to lay low in a remote motel after a car accident. He soon becomes involved with Michelle Norton (Andress), the owner's wife, but when the diamonds vanish and Joe arrives wanting his share, violence and tragedy ensue.
