En mörk natt flyttar den amerikanska familjen Blake in i den lilla staden Cholong-sur-Avre i Normandie. Pappa Fred ska skriva en bok om de allierades landstigning, hans fru Maggie engagerar sig i lokal välgörenhet och deras två tonåringar börjar på gymnasiet. Vid första anblicken är de i det närmaste en familj som alla andra.
