Ända sedan Ricky och Abby gifte sig och bildade familj har de velat ge sina älskade barn en trygg uppväxt, helst i eget hus. Nu har dottern Liz hunnit bli elva, sonen Seb är sexton och husdrömmen känns mer avlägsen än någonsin. I sitt stressiga vårdjobb kämpar Abby varje dag mot klockan för att hinna ge sina patienter en känsla av människovärde. För att slippa fler underbetalda ströjobb skaffar Ricky en skåpbil, men snart förstår han att uppdragsgivarens snåriga regelverk är uttänkt för att förarna ska utnyttjas och skuldsättas.<br/>Ricky och Abby tvingas ständigt arbeta allt hårdare, samtidigt som barnen alltför många kvällar lämnas ensamma hemma. Joy finds brief happiness with Tom's criminal associate Dave (Terence Stamp), who proves kind and gentle when she moves in with him, but this relationship ends when he is also jailed, and Joy is left to raise her young son alone in squalid circumstances.
