Högstadieeleven Kokoro är mobbad, trivs inte längre i skolan och tillbringar sina dagar hemma i sitt rum. En tidig eftermiddag i maj börjar hennes spegel plötsligt avge ett starkt ljus som suger in henne. När hon öppnar ögonen ser hon ett slott som hämtat ur en saga och träffar sex andra högstadieelever som alla är helt främmande för henne.
