Filmen är inspirerad av de sanna händelserna år 1976 då ett Air France-plan kapades. Planet var på väg från Tel Aviv till Paris men tvingades nödlanda i Entebbe, Uganda, med passagerare hållna som gisslan. Därefter inleddes en av tidernas mest våghalsiga räddningsaktioner.
