Monika (Andersson) och Harry (Ekborg) flyr tristessen i sina hem och på arbetsplatsen och tillbringar en kort sommar av lycka i skärgården. Monika blir med barn och när de återvänder till stan gifter de sig. Deras heta kärlek från sommarens sorglösa månader utsätts för påfrestningar när vardagslivet tränger sig på.

En splittrad familj återförenas under ett dygn ute på en isolerad sommarö. Familjen består av fyra personer: fadern, dottern, dotterns man och sonen. De är alla fångar i sig själva och präglade av ett outtalat och djupt förträngt kontaktbehov. Men de bär också på en längtan efter ömhet vilket leder till smärtsamma uppgörelser.

Marie är elev vid Operans balettskola och på den årliga avslutningen lägger hon märke till Henrik, som tydligen beundrar henne mycket. De träffas senare under sommarlovet i skärgården, blir förälskade i varandra och mycket lyckliga. Henrik dör emellertid plötsligt i en olycka.<br/><br/>Åren går och Marie blir prima ballerina. Dagen före en stor premiär får hon ett paket, som visar sig innehålla den dagbok som Henrik skrev under deras sommar tillsammans.

The judge, playing on the insecurities and vanity of the three actors, brings to light their deepest, darkest secrets.
