Phillip Vanderploeg (Fraser) is an American actor living in Japan who is struggling to make a living. Desperate, he accepts a job at Rental Family, a company which provides actors to strangers who need them to play the roles of family members or friends. Although Phillip is initially uncertain, he comes to find the experience rewarding until it causes his life to become increasingly complicated.
