Libyen 1943. Med sin mäktiga pansardivision har Rommel drivit in britterna i en desperat situation. Nu står deras enda hopp till kapten Foster (Richard Burton). I 1910-talets USA börjar cirkusdirektören Matt Masters (John Wayne) få problem. Ingen tycks längre vara intresserad av att se hans clowner, jonglörer och vilda djur.
