Charlie Chaplin var övertygad om att humor är det bästa vapnet. I filmen Diktatorn driver han hejdlöst med Hiter och i En kung i New York gör han en träffande satir över 1950-talets Amerika.<br/>En avsatt kunglighet anländer till New York och upptäcker att hans premiärminister rymt med alla hans pengar. För att klara av att betala den enorma hotellräkning han dragit på sig går han med på att göra tevereklam. Samtidigt utsätts en pojke för påtryckningar från regeringsagenter som försöker få honom att ange sina föräldrar. Frustrerad av att regeringen spenderar enorma summor på pajaser och skojare samtidigt som man bryter mot konstitutionen beslutar sig kungen för att lämna landet, men inte förrän han lyckas ge den unge pojken hopp om en bättre framtid.
