Sisters Jackie and Hilary du Pré (Watson and Griffiths) are both gifted musicians, Jackie playing the cello and Hilary the flute. While Jackie becomes an international star and tours the world, Hilary stays in London, plays in a community orchestra and marries conductor Kiffer Kinzi (David Morrissey). Jackie meanwhile marries renowned pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim (James Frain) but her relationship with Hilary begins to fracture as she is consumed with anxiety about her declining health.
