The novel follows the journey of French ex-convict Jean Valjean who atones for his sins by becoming an upstanding member of society. In the 1980s it was adapted into a stage musical, produced by Cameron Mackintosh, in which Alfie Boe later played the lead role. Tom Hooper directed the 2012 film version which stars Hugh Jackman as Valjean.
