Det brittiska imperiet skapades av män som sergeanterna Danny Dravot (Sean Connery) och Peachy Carnehan (Michael Caine) och nu ger de sig iväg för att skapa sitt eget imperium. De beger sig till det fjärran Kafiristan för att hitta rikedomar som kan göra dem till kungar. Efter diverse äventyr lyckas de båda med hjälp av Billy Fish (Saeed Jaffrey) att få folket att tro att Dravot är en gud.
