En ung aspirerande författare förföljer främlingar i sökandet efter inspiration inför sin första roman. När han blir påkommen av en välvårdad man i mörk kostym tar inspirationen en helt ny riktning, och de två slår följe under en serie inbrott. Following är Christopher Nolans (Memento, Inception, Tenet) debutfilm och en noirdoftande mysteriethriller. Filmen, filmad på 16mm-film, la grunden för det vi kommit att se som Nolans kännetecken, och belönades med både festivalpriser och kritikers lovord vid sin premiär.

Laurence Olivier förärades även Guldlejonet i Venedig, där också medskådespelerskan Jean Simmons fick pris för Bästa Kvinnliga Huvudroll. Förutom att Laurence Olivier regisserar sig själv i huvudrollen har han även skrivit filmmanuset och är dessutom en av filmens producenter. Originalpjäsen är fyra och en halv timme lång, men denna filmversion har kortats två timmar genom att bland annat utesluta vissa karaktärer.<br/><br/>Olivier kalllar därför sin film "en studie i Hamlet" snarare än en filmatisering. Den berömda fäktningsscenen varar i 10 minuter och tog 14 dagar att spela in. Olivier skadade sig flera gånger under inspelningen. Han bröt en fot under en kameravagn, ramlade och knäckte ett revben, och fick dessutom en kniv i bröstet under en duellscen.
