När R.E.M. gav ut sin första singel "Radio Free Europe" 1981, blev de snabbt ett favoritband i amerikanska underground-kretsar. Låten inleder deras första album "Murmur" som släpptes 1983. De skapade ett speciellt sound som bara kan betecknas som tidlöst. Givetvis hade bandet sina influenser, som alltid är fallet, men plattan har en så egen stil att den får bilda egen skola. Det atmosfäriska soundet och Michael Stipes mumlande sång ger en mystisk känsla. R.E.M. skulle fortsätta att vara ett hyllat underground-band några år till, innan de blev var mans egendom. De har gjort flera mästerverk, men har aldrig mer låtit som de gjorde på denna sagolika debutplatta.
