Private Mizushima (Shôji Yasui) is the harp player for Captain Inouye (Rentarô Mikuni)'s regiment. They have been fighting in Burma but when they come across a group of British soldiers, they learn that Japan has surrended and the war is over. A small band of Japanese soldiers are fighting nearby and a British captain asks Mizushima if he can convince them to surrender and save their lives. However, they refuse his entreaties and are killed in the ensuing attack. In the aftermath, Mizushima disguises himself as a Buddhist monk and embarks on a journey to promote peace whilst also burying the dead Japanese soldiers he encounters as he travels. In 'The Shining' (1980), seeking solitude in order to write a novel, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as an off-season caretaker at the remote Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Eager to get started, Jack disregards warnings that the isolation drove a former caretaker mad, and moves into the massive resort with his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall) and son Danny (Danny Lloyd). But Danny has a supernatural gift which makes him aware of an evil lurking in the hotel, and sure enough, as winter storms cut the hotel off from civilisation, Jack gradually becomes murderously insane. Finally, 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987) details the dehumanising effect of military combat, as experienced by a bunch of Vietnam conscripts under the training of the sadistic Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. 'Sisu' (2022) is set in Finnish Lapland in 1944 where gold prospector Aatami Korpi (Tommila)'s hard work pays off and he discovers a rich gold deposit. While travelling to the nearest town with a large amount of gold nuggets, he crosses paths with a Nazi battalion led by ruthless SS Obersturmführer Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie). The Nazis are destroying settlements and taking prisoners as they retreat and they want Aatami's gold. Aatami, however, is skilled and fearless and will do whatever it takes to keep what is his. The sequel 'Sisu: Road to Revenge' (2025) is set in 1946 when Aatami returns to his former home in Soviet-occupied Karelia where his family was brutally murdered during the war. He dismantles his house entirely, intent on rebuilding it somewhere safe in their honour, but when the Red Army find out about his return they send Igor Draganov (Stephen Lang), the soldier who killed Aatami's family, to kill him. Anthony Swofford (Gyllenhaal) attends United States Marine Corps recruit training in 1989. After a brutal spell in boot camp during which Swofford and his fellow recruits are systematically prepared for conflict, those who survived are dispatched to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield in the Gulf War. However, although they are eager for combat, they are forced to wait and train to take part in a war they do not understand. Bored and frustrated and stuck in the middle of nowhere, the young soldiers rely on their shared macabre sense of humour for entertainment as they wait for war.
